2 months of Teaching in Rural Uttarakhand

After almost two months of volunteer-teaching the students of rural Uttarakhand, I realized how privileged I am, to have had a proper education- a methodical learning system. A system that did not believe that once you beat up a student, he will magically know everything. A system that gave me excellent teachers who helped me develop my own relationships with the subjects, rather than mug up just for exams.

It is hard to believe that even after 70+ years of Independence, our villages are struggling to receive the most basic education for the students. Whether the subject is of Mathematics or English, I had been teaching the same lesson to a student of 1st, 4th or 8th standard with just a little variations. From what I gather, the government schemes to promote primary education are well in place, but there are far too many leaks on the path by the time they reach the students.

Every day as I taught these under privileged students, in a makeshift classroom, sometimes under a tree or in the temple, I couldn’t help wondering if I can do anything even remotely effective, to improve the rural primary education.

After supporting Learning Management System for worldwide businesses for 4.5 years and being a part of a budding preschool for 8 years, it only seems logical that I got this opportunity to understand the ‘physical’ learning system at the grassroot level of my own country.

More of my learnings from volunteering and travelling coming up soon on my blog!
